Processus de solidification et de fusion d’un fluide magnétique à base d’eau.

Solidification and melting process of water-based magnetic fluid.

Résumé

Water-based magnetic fluid (WBMF) is a nanofluid in which 10nm-sized magnetic particles are stably dispersed in water. Because the Brown motions of the particles are dominant, the WBMF behaves like a liquid even under a magnetic field without the aggregations or sedimentation of the particles. Although the WBMF responds to the external magnetic field and shows unique kinetic behaviour or changes in thermal physical properties, their influence on the solidification and melting process is not well understood. In the present study, we investigated the solidification and melting process of the WBMF, expecting the application to a phase change material. The results show that the natural convection in solidification process was suppressed by applying magnetic field. Furthermore, WBMF can maintain the low temperature for a longer period of time compared to the purified water.
