Résumé

This study experimentally investigated the frost patterns on simple geometries such as flat plate and circular tube to propose the empirical correlation equations for the local and average frost thickness, frost density and frost mass of frosted evaporator of the heat pump. The key test parameters were air temperature from 2 to 7°C, absolute humidity of air from 2.98 to 4.16 g/kg(DA), air velocity from 1 to 2 m/s, and surface temperature of the flat plate from -5 to -15°C. The coolant was 50% ethylene-glycol aqueous solution. This study also measured the frost thickness and the frost mass on a fin and tube to compare with the values predicted by the fin and tube model utilizing the correlation equations for the flat plate and circular tube. The empirical correlations under the heat pump condition in this study predict more accurately than the other correlations that are available in the literatures. The frost on the space between the fin and the circular tube formed a meniscus as time passes. It caused the difference between the predicted and measured frost thickness and mass. The proposed correlation for the frost thickness agreed with the measured data within 5%, while the proposed correlation for the frost mass agreed with the measured data within 10%.
