Résumé

An experimental solar energy facility was designed to meet as much of the space heating demand in a typical Spanish dwelling as possible, whose average area is 80-m2 and generally are entirely heated in winter. However, during the summertime most of Spanish homes do not air-condition all the space, but usually the living room and an additional room, what accounts for approximately half of the total area. Taking this into account and in order to use the facility during the summer and to protect the collectors against overheating, an air-cooled 4.5 kW LiBr/water absorption chiller was fitted to the system to air-condition a 40 m2 room. This work presents results of the solar cooling system working during summer of 2008. The design was based on a new type of evacuated flat plate solar collectors that delivered higher efficiency than conventional panels. The experiments proved that approximately 10 m2 of solar panels are needed to produce 1 kW of cooling with an air-cooled LiBr/H2O absorption chiller. The solar fraction obtained was 92 %. Finally, although the solar cooling system considered uses almost as much as electricity as a conventional cooling plant, the savings in equivalent CO2 emissions afforded by this facility resulted to be lower. These results were extrapolated to all the Spanish households calculating the potential emissions reduction.
