Simulation du démarrage et du fonctionnement de secours des systèmes de refroidissement à boucle par pompage de CO2 de nouvelle génération.

Simulating the startup and backup operation of next-generation CO2 pumped-loop cooling systems.

Résumé

CO2-based pumped-loop cooling systems have a storied history at CERN. The fluid properties of CO2 make it ideal for thermally-sensitive Silicon detectors. The next generation systems will be bigger and colder, climbing an order of magnitude in cooling power and going down to -53°C at the pump inlet, with several systems operating in parallel. This scaling up is not trivial and new design aspects have been introduced at both com-ponent- and system-level. To study these aspects, a simulation tool previously developed at CERN is used to simulate dynamics. The system includes Plant, Accumulator, Surface Storage and Backup Plant modules, as well as the full control system. With this tool, the new startup sequences are studied. The failure of a main plant (swap to backup) is also simulated. The simulations show good promise of stable operation of the new systems without perturbing the detector.
