Résumé

Hydrocarbons as refrigerants have been in wide use for over 30 years in small refrigeration systems requiring small refrigerant charges. They primarily have used R-600a and R-290 because of their large availability in the marketplace as fuels. Little consideration has been given to reviewing the optimization or selection of potential hydrocarbons and their blends. Given the phaseout of hydrocarbons as fuels, R-600a and R-290 will come under increasing pressure in the supply chain to be synthetically produced from natural sources. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have been gaining in use for increasing refrigeration capacity systems, and future optimization is needed to improve safety and performance as well. This paper provides a review of hydrocarbons with a carbon chain length of C1 to C4 as potential refrigerants by evaluating combinations of hydrocarbons and investigating potential blend opportunities for improved performance as well as safety characteristics in consideration of flammability limits.
