Résumé

In recent years, information and communications technologies (ICTs) have been widely used in society. This achievement has led to improvements in the performance of IT devices such as servers and routers for data centers, and their density volume has increased greatly. Therefore, the heat generated by ICT facilities, which accounts for more than 30% of the total electricity consumed in data centers, has also increased greatly. Then, it is necessary to develop more efficient cooling technologies for data centers. Studies of heat transportation systems using CO2 as the working fluid have been intermittently conducted for supermarket air-conditioning systems. Use of CO2 as the working fluid for cooling systems offers electrical reaction stability, latent heat utilization, reduction in the circulation flow rate, etc. However, its application to data centers is still very rare. Therefore, we have examined the operation characteristics of heat transportation system for forced and natural circulation using CO2. In the paper, as a first report, we investigate experimentally and through a simulation the performance and characteristics of the system with CO2 forced circulation. Specifically, we discuss the effect of the server rack air temperature, air volume flow rate, and CO2 circulation flow rate. As a result, the simulation prediction of the heat transfer rate was within 5%, and the predicted pressure drop in the evaporator was within 25%. Therefore, we confirmed the validity of the simulation model. We also determined the optimum CO2 circulation flow rate and air volume flow rate to maximize the heat transfer rate.
