Résumé
In recent years, information and communications technologies (ICT) have become widely used. With this change, the performance of IT devices, such as servers and routers for data centres, has advanced, and their density volume has increased greatly. Consequently, the heat generated by ICT facilities, which accounts for more than 30% of the total electricity consumed by data centres, has also increased greatly. Therefore, we must develop efficient cooling technologies for data centres. To achieve efficient data centre air conditioning, we constructed a CO2 heat transportation system of the server spot-cooling type based on typical data centre air conditioning methods. Saito et al. (2012) investigated the operation characteristics of the forced circulation system that was operated between blade server racks, with CO2 as a working fluid. This paper discussed the operation system that saves energy by eliminating the need for a power source, such as a pump or compressor, to drive the circulation. Hence, we investigated the systems performance and characteristics under CO2 natural circulation using simulations and experiments. The results showed that the experimental and simulated tendencies by the server rack exhausted air temperature and server rack air volume flow rate were consistent, although slight differences appeared. We determined that the heat transportation performance factor has a maximum point at a low heat transfer rate and cooling air outlet temperature because the fan power required for air volume flow increases with increasing air volume flow rate.
