Résumé

Ammonia is a well-known and popular natural refrigerant used in industrial refrigeration systems for many decades now. In India also, Ammonia is widely used in food and beverage, marine and many more applications - either in the form of a packaged chiller or as a distributed system, where Ammonia is piped over considerable distance to different unit coolers.

Though Ammonia is a good refrigerant to work with, the safety concerns in using Ammonia have somewhat limited its growth potential in India. The recent advancement in developing low charge Ammonia systems is poised to change the trend. In quite a few cold chain sites in India, low charge Ammonia systems have been successfully applied, taking the plant safety levels higher by few notches.

The current challenge of finding a low GWP alternate for R22, R410A and R134a in air conditioning chiller application has brought the spotlight on how Europe has successfully applied Ammonia systems in public utility places over the last decade. This article attempts to highlight what has been done on the product side and the type of methodical safety assessment done before successfully applying low charge Ammonia chillers in public utility places in Europe.
