Résumé

Trans-critical R744 refrigeration technology will be implemented as primary cooling for on-detector pumped CO2 cooling systems for the ATLAS and CMS detector upgrades at CERN. Altogether, both detectors will dissipate a nominal power up to 1MW and the silicon sensors must be kept cooled below -35℃, to avoid thermal runaway caused by the long-term radiation damage, leading to evaporation temperatures of the primary system below -50℃. The new concept must ensure full reliability and stable operation resulting in a modular design. Moreover, the LHC and its experiments are located about 100m below surface leading to large elevations between the evaporator feed and the return lines, as the trans-critical primary is located on surface and the pumped systems underground.
This paper describes the development of a simulation model used to validate the experimental results retrieved after testing the first unit built. The simulation of the demonstration plant explores the systems control logic adopted to manage two vapour compressor modules.
