Résumé

To cool down the detectors, ATLAS and CMS, at CERN, a R744 refrigeration system is needed operating at ultra -low temperature region while coping with large load demand (up to 550 kW). The silicon sensors must be kept cool below -35 ℃ to avoid thermal runaway, leading to evaporation temperatures of the system below -50 ℃. Furthermore, the detectors are located about 100 m below surface leading to large elevations, as the gas cooler are located on surface and the evaporators underground. A trans-critical demonstration plant is developed, complying with the above requirements and achieving 70 kW cooling capacity, to analyse the refrigerants behaviour inside the long vertical and horizontal pipelines and the oil management. In addition, a simulation model is designed. This paper describes the development of the model and presents first analysis results.
