Résumé

Since the operating range of modern magnetocaloric materials is limited to some 3 to 10 K to date in a magnetic refrigerator many alloys – each covering one part of the overall temperature span – are cascaded along the heat transfer fluid flow direction. This can lead to gaps in magnetocaloric performance and even reduce the temperature span of the refrigerator. In order to overcome these limitations continuously graded LaFe(13-x-y)Co(y)Si(x) was prepared by solid state diffusion of two or more starting alloys at 1373 K. The graded material exhibits a continuous variation of Curie temperatures along the length of its body with a seamless change of magnetocaloric properties. Using graded material gaps in performance can be avoided. Gradients of Curie temperature between 10 and 0.3 K/mm were reached for diffusion times between 4 and 64h. From the experimental data the diffusion coefficient of Co in LaFe(13-x-y)Co(y)Si(x) at 1373 K was determined to be 2.3 x 10^11 m2/s.
