Résumé

A general feeling of concern regarding airborne infections related to SARS, new influenza and bio-terrorism prevails. The author investigated air cleaning technologies applied to air conditioning systems for disinfection and removal of air-borne microbes, and commented on their mechanisms, processes for their performance evaluation, and evaluation examples. Due to the dangers involved, previous research on influenza virus activity has been done using the viruses pasted on plates rather than as airborne microbes. The author's group estimated the airborne influenza viral activity using a negative pressure chamber of bio-safety level 2. They discovered that the influenza viruses in simulated humor fine airborne droplets, which had been sprayed in air, maintained their activity for more than one hour.
