The industry has increasing interest in consistent data base of the heat transfer of finned and enhanced surfaces in evaporator. The heat transfer coefficient in pool boiling is mainly determined by the heat flux, the saturation pressure, the thermophysical properties of the liquid and the properties of the material and the structure of the heating surface. In this context, the heat transfer and bubble dynamics in propane boiling in a wide range of pressure and heat flux on the outside of a horizontal finned mild steel tube is presented. The results are described within the experimental scatter by semi-empirical correlations for single tubes for intermediate pressures. The enhancement factor for the finned tube depends on the heat flux and pressure. The highest values are achieved for beginning nucleation with an enhancement of 300%. Simultaneously to the heat transfer measurements, the bubble formation is examined by photographs and by high speed video technique. The first results for intermediate pressures and low heat fluxes are compared to existing correlations of literature and experimental results. The bubble departure diameter is smaller than the free spacing of the fins and is overpredicted 50 to 200% by the known correlations.
