Résumé
Over the coming years, grid operators, especially in Europe, will be faced with an increasing amount of challenges due to the introduction of renewable energies, e.g. wind power. One of the proposed solutions to these challenges is to utilize the demand side management through a Smart Grid setup. The demand side management relies on flexible power consumption, and a way to increase the flexibility is to introduce energy storage, and thereby enable the ability to move power consumption away from peak hours. This paper describes a test setup where ice storage is utilized as an add-on solution for a CO2 based refrigeration system. The upcoming test is intended to provide information to system designers regarding the optimal sizing and layout of the ice bank as well as control strategies. Calculations based on the Danish Reference Year (DRY) representing a colder climate are compared to a temperature profile from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) representing a warmer climate. The calculations show a potential of larger energy savings for the warmer climate and significant savings from day and night price tariffs. The amortisation period is however more than 5 years even for the most favourable condition. Factors such as heat recovery, down-sizing, and optimised operation modes are suggested as topics for future analysis in order to reduce the amortisation period for the investment in the ice bank.
