Résumé

US thermoelectric power plants contribute to about 40% of nation’s fresh water withdrawals, primarily due to cooling. The reduction of water consumption and its use is emerging as a top priority for all types of thermoelectric power plants. Several factors contribute to intensified water scarcity, including the increased demands for electricity, increased water use in other sectors. Water conversation is rapidly becoming the driving force behind many wide-spread decisions in power plant industry. Water conversation is at the heart of this EPRI R&D program. In this paper, the technical and economic feasibility of application of thermally-driven absorption chillers in power plant cooling has been discussed. It is found that the chiller COP is an important factor that would have an impact on the steam turbine cycle net output. The turbine output penalty will not be diminished unless the chiller COP can be higher than 1.8 with a regeneration temperature of 100 °C.
