Why is ammonia such a good refrigerant ?

Numéro : pap. n. 49

Auteurs : PEARSON A.

Résumé

This paper seeks to explain the reasons why ammonia has been so widely used as a refrigerant for so long, without using buzzwords, jargon or technical terms. The purpose is to provide engineers and technicians with information which may usefully be passed on to managers, financial controllers and company directors who require a justification for the choice of ammonia but who do not need to understand the underlying science behind the justification. All of the underlying science has been presented before, much of it in previous Ohrid conferences, but this is the first time it has been collected and laid down in layman’s terms. The paper concludes with a short review of the key elements of safety standards which must be followed and notes that these requirements are necessary for all refrigeration fluids in industrial systems, not only ammonia.
