Comparative analysis of the domestic hot water production with R290 and R744 heat pumps.

Résumé

This paper analyses different systems for the production of DHW using a heat pump. Three systems are compared: a R744 heat pump, a R290 heat pump with optimized subcooling and a R290 heat pump working with a constant temperature lift in the condenser. The systems also include a storage tank that is different for each case. The R290 optimized subcooling heat pump is coupled with a variable-volume storage tank whereas the R744 case and the R290 constant temperature lift case are coupled with the conventional stratified storage tank. Each of the systems are optimized to the application with the objective of minimizing the annual electrical consumption while ensuring comfort requirements. The optimization includes the sizes of the heat pump and the domestic hot water tank, and the proper control strategy. The paper shows that for this kind of application the R290 optimized subcooling option leads to significant lower consumptions.
