Résumé

In 2009 the writer was commissioned to design and budget cost a two stage transcritical CO2 refrigeration system to phase out 17 small CFC and HCFC refrigeration systems. The Australian Government supported this world first project with an applied Research and Development grant of 50%.
After significant difficulties the system produced reductions of 33%, 60%, and 44% respectively in the specific electrical energy and gas consumption, and attendant CO2 Global Warming emissions per kg of frozen dairy desserts produced.
Using a Council of Australian Governments data base on annual energy consumption per m2 of floor area, it is shown that significant reductions in the electrical energy and gas consumption plus attendant emissions are achievable with transcritical CO2 systems for the cooling and heating of buildings and hot water production when using evaporative gas coolers, which produce 31°C CO2 gas cooler exit temperatures at 28°C ambient wet bulb temperature.
