Résumé

Technological advances have revolutionized crop productivity during this century, but the increase in crop yields has begun to slow while the world's population continues to expand. Land degradation and pressure on water resources present serious obstacles to much-needed increases in land productivity. Meeting 21st-century global food needs will require consistent population control policies, a move to sustainable consumption, and greatly improved efficiency in our use of land, water, and other natural resources. This article provides a forward-looking analysis of these issues and recommendations to address them.
