Sustainability issues concern the entire food production and supply chain, from agricultural production and processing to packing, distribution and final consumption. Each of these steps involves input of resources and generation of wastes and emissions. This article explores some of the ways food production and consumption can be made more sustainable through greater resource efficiency, application of technology, consumer education, and better understanding of consumer demand. It also looks at how the food industry is responding to these challenges.
