Résumé
The liquid hydrogen is produced in the plants using complex thermodynamic processes. Hydrogen is liquefied near a temperature of 20 K. The low liquefaction temperature and unique hydrogen properties bring specific requirements to cryogenic plants. With respect to maximising the hydrogen yield, different thermodynamic cycles are used for the process of liquefaction.
The essential part of many thermodynamic cycles is the device where the process gas expands from the high-pressure while is cooled. The turboexpanders equipped with gas dynamics or static bearings are very often used in this field with a wide range of operation parameters to increase the effectiveness of the whole cycle.
The widely used is the cycle with the precooling where the hydrogen is brought to the needed temperatures for liquefaction on the J-T valve by the cooling loop that is separated from the main hydrogen loop. With consideration of the low temperatures, for the cooling loop helium or hydrogen can be used, both with some advantages.
Both systems are compared in detail with respect to the turboexpanders design and parameters on the specific case for the liquefaction system with production about 5 TPD and with the cooling capacity of the expansion ca 90 kW.
