Résumé

For developing countries, the lack of an adequate cold chain infrastructure leads to massive post-harvest losses. The shortage of cold storage facilities also forces farmers to sell their crops at much lower prices due to the challenges in preserving perishable food. In much of the developing world, the lack of a reliable electric grid hinders the implementation of electrically driven conventional vapor compression systems. This work addresses these challenges by developing a thermally driven adsorption refrigeration system using refrigerant-adsorbent working pairs with zero global warming potential and removing the dependence on an unreliable electricity grid. The thermally driven refrigeration cycle is analyzed, and a new system is proposed using an adiabatic cooling tower. Component level models are developed for the new heat rejection and cooling components to ensure that they meet the temperature and duty requirements of a ~10 kW cooling system, and a fully integrated cycle model is presented.
