In Japan, energy saving is inevitable now and high-efficiency commercial refrigerators with inverter compressors are getting popular using fluorocarbon. But fluorocarbon-free refrigerators are demanded to reduce GWP. The authors developed a compact inverter refrigerating system with an inverter compressor using R600a for the primary refrigerant and CO2 by "thermosiphon" for the secondary refrigerant. They successfully limited the refrigerant volume to 40 grams of R600a and 100 grams of CO2 by applying the condenser and evaporator with spiral finned small diameter tubes and by the R600a/CO2 heat exchanger for CO2 precooling. As a result, the authors could eliminate the CO2 expansion tank and realize the compact, cost-saving system and secured the safety by preventing leakage of flammable gas inside the chamber and by minimizing the refrigerant volume of R600a. They realized energy saving of 5% against their own inverter refrigerating system with 280 grams of R134a when equipped in a 1000-liter refrigerator.
