Résumé

25 years have passed since Gustav Lorentzen left this world after a passionate life as refrigeration professor. In the early 1990s Prof. Lorentzen and his team made the revival of carbon dioxide as a refrigerant happen. His and other teams around the globe have since that time developed remarkable R744 based refrigeration systems. These developments enable end-users nowadays to apply energy efficient vapour compression systems.
This article describes the development milestones of modern CO2 refrigeration technology, which partly has been predicted by Prof. Lorentzen as some of his ideas have been further developed. In the first part, after the introduction to CO2 refrigeration technology invented by Lorenzen (1990, 1993, 1995), focus will be given to the development steps of components like compressors, expanders, ejectors, heat
exchangers, etc. In the second part the ideas behind several system configurations for various applications will be described and discussed.
