Développement de stratégies de décongélation efficaces pour les systèmes de transport frigorifiques. I. Installation d'essai.

Development of efficient defrosting strategies for refrigerated transportation systems. I. Experimental test facility.

Résumé

Despite offering ease of implementation, the current strategies governing the activation and termination of defrost cycles in commercial transport refrigeration systems are both rigid and inefficient. Such defrost cycles are typically initiated by a combination of prescheduled time intervals and measured temperature differences. Neither of these approaches account for various parameters such as the trailer set-point temperature, trailer size, humidity, discharge airflow, refrigerant temperature, the load type or ambient conditions, all factors that greatly affect the rate of frost formation. The aim of this research study is to develop a facility capable of characterising the frosting and defrosting process and use this facility to identify and implement novel control algorithms for effective and efficient defrosting of transport refrigeration systems under a range of typical operating conditions. This paper addresses the first objective and describes the comprehensive test facility developed, capable of monitoring the behaviour of a commercial transport refrigeration system under a wide range of operating conditions. The accompanying Part II paper presents some of the early findings of the experimental program (see this Bulletin, reference 2006-0446).
