Résumé
These intermetallic compounds were successfully synthesized by an alternative process using a methalothermic reduction of lanthanum oxide, with calcium as reduction agent. Lanthanum based compounds are conventionally obtained by melting techniques, like arc melting, which is known as a long time process. Calciothermic reduction-diffusion leads to a one-step low cost process with reduced homogenization time. The structure and magnetocaloric effect of these samples were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction patterns and magnetic measurements. The data was analysed by Rietveld method, which indicated the presence of the main cubic NaZn13 type structure, with spacial group Fm3c, and an amount of 20.5 wt% of secondary alpha-Fe phase. Astonishing, magnetic measurements showed higher Curie temperatures compared to lanthanum based compounds produced by conventional techniques. The obtained transition temperature is close to the LaFe(13-x)Si(x) hydrides and it seems that lanthanum based compounds produced by methalothermic reduction are promising candidates as magnetic refrigerants at room-temperature applications.
