Résumé

This study proposes the replacement of water with CO2 in district cooling and heating infrastructures. Compared to water, CO2 can transport the same amount of thermal energy with smaller pipes, lower friction losses and cooling via direct expansion. A distributed network of CO2 heat pumps is proposed to recover superheated gas from network for heating while cooling is transported along large distances via non-insulated liquid pipes. Given CERN’s has significant heat surplus, and every building is interconnected via underground tunnels, the implementation of such infrastructure would be rather easy, beneficial to recover the surplus heat recovery and could significantly reduce the current infrastructure. This technical solution is compared to currently used systems in terms of efficiency and the potential operational opportunities and challenges of using CO2 instead of water are discussed.
