Résumé

The goal of this work is to determine and analyse the indoor air quality and energy consumption in an apartment located in Vitoria - Gasteiz (Spain). The approval of the Technical Building Code (CTE) has meant major changes in the construction of multi-storey buildings in Spain. One of the most important revisions, with respect to the buildings built prior to the Technical Building Code, has been the obligation to ventilate each one of its rooms. Depending on the use and occupancy, a minimum ventilation flow rate is required in each room. To achieve these air flow rates, different types of mechanical ventilation systems are being installed. It is necessary to assess if the defined minimum air flow rates are sufficient to achieve acceptable indoor air quality levels. However, from the energy consumption point of view, ventilation can be a penalty. The most widely used building energy simulation software does not allow a joint analysis of indoor-air quality and energy consumption. In this work, the analysis has been carried out coupling Trnsys, Contam and Matlab. The model has been used to compare the indoor air quality and the energy consumption in an apartment built according to regulation referring to natural ventilation (prior to CTE), and in the same apartment equipped with ventilation systems that are usually installed since the approval of CTE (continuous exhaust and humidity-controlled systems). 15 different contaminants have been taken into account. The results have been analysed using a global air quality index. The energy saving criteria have been considered only if the defined air quality criteria is met. The results also demonstrate the importance of air infiltration on the performance of the ventilation systems.
