Résumé

The impact of transparent elements on building energy performance is considered particularly important, since they perform many vital functions, which require properties that are often conflicting and variable in relation to time, both diurnal and seasonal. To enable consumers and engineers to make energy efficient decisions, several countries have already established systems for the energy rating of windows and fenestration products. In general terms, a window energy rating system provides a universal set of tools and methodologies, which allow for the direct comparison of different window products on a common basis and enables the consumers and designers to select windows with regard to their energy performance. The proposed paper focuses on the presentation of the existing and proposed window energy rating systems found worldwide by introducing the methodologies applied and the labels used in each country. The inter-comparison of the schemes gives an indication of the parameters that are critical in each country and can be the first step towards developing and adopting a European labeling scheme for fenestration. Such an approach obtains additional credit under the framework of the desired energy conservation in the building sector.
