Volatile halogenated organic compounds are anthropogenic, a fact that is easy to calculate. They have a natural origin (ocean algae, volcanic emissions, wood-rotting fungi, biomass burning). The article explains the process of oxidation during degradation of organic matter and its effects on the ground.
