Influence of vacuum precooling on the vase life of cut daffodil flowers.

Résumé

Vacuum cooling is a rapid cooling technique, used to maintain the quality and extend the shelf life of vegetables. The application of vacuum cooling to the floriculture industry has great potential advantages. In the current studies, freshly cut flowers were vacuum cooled to 2 °C and their cooling process monitored. The vase life was determined subjectively by the following criteria: condition of floral material, retention of firm pedicles and flower colour. Vacuum cooling is a very quick, easy and effective method of precooling cut daffodil flowers and is beneficial to the extension of their vase life. The influence of spraying water on the cut flowers prior to vacuum cooling was also examined.
