These proceedings contain 21 papers presented at this second international IIR conference on this theme, held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on May 10-12, 2001. Extract from the table of contents: integrated soldier cooling; development of a virtual manikin; modern heat transfer solution for optimal clothing; underwear and clothing for best human thermoregulation; human thermal regulation with phase change material; research on numerical computation of dynamic heat load and variable frequency energy-saving in marine central air conditioning; individual and collective cooling systems results and quantified performances using an objective method; prospective investigation of the refrigerated container transport in the 21st century; third-generation military containers; evaluation of a personal air-cooling system for the dismounted soldier; investigating the weight/performance trade-off for a generic man-portable personal-cooling system. A keynote speech given at the IIR conference in Paris 1999 is also included: air conditioning principles for appropriate human comfort and new development in refrigeration systems.
