Résumé

These proceedings contain 34 papers presented at this conference, organized by the Academy for Scientific Research and Technology, and the National Committee of the IIR, held in Cairo, Egypt, on April 29-May 1st, 2001. The aim of the conference was to examine and discuss the present status and future of refrigeration and air conditioning in Arab and African countries. It is divided into 4 parts: air conditioning (a simple performance evaluator of desiccant cooling and dehumidification technology; cooling degree-days for selected locations in Nigeria; effect of acoustic excitation on spray characteristics produced by atomizers in air handling units); refrigeration and refrigeration systems (modelling the separation inside the generator of an absorption chiller; practical considerations in operating commercial chilling systems; reliability analysis of refrigeration systems used in liquefied natural gas production; design of a simple evaporative condenser as a component of vapour compression refrigeration cycle); heat transfer and heat exchangers (assessment of numerical studies on the effect of supply air outlets on air flow pattern; flow and heat transfer around a cylinder located near a plane wall with different clearance in cross flow); refrigerants and the environment (use of R417A in refrigeration and air conditioning applications; quasi-azeotropic blend of propane-R134a, an alternative to R22; design of a wind activated ventilation device).
