Résumé

The problem of the demographic explosion and of energy and food resources are closely connected. The growing rate of the world population and the consequences of the petroleum crisis after the Arab-Israeli war of 1973 enables us to foresee that in a few years the energy situation may present dramatic aspects for some countries. The food resources in recent years have been larger than the population growing rate, but the lack of balance between developed and developing countries has not reduced. As we//as research for new sources, strong efforts are required for reducing losses in the energy and food field and for reducing the lack of balance from one region to another. In this frame the role of refrigeration will assume foremost importance. We first need to improve the exergetic efficiency of refrigerating systems and to introduce more rational and integrated processes (e.g. heat pumps). We need to improve the weakest links of the cold chain and to develop refrigeration systems more suited to the conditions of the developing countries. We need to obtain a closer collaboration between the technicians of the different sectors and the politicians. The IIR with its interdisciplinary character may give an example of effective collaboration.
