Résumé
Solar-powered refrigeration can be considered a useful tool in reducing CO2 emissions related to electricity consumption of mechanical refrigeration applications and offers the possibility of Off-Grid refrigeration in remote regions that have no access to electricity.
Manufacturers offering heat-driven refrigeration systems provide solar-powered, small-scale refrigerators that rely on a combination of batteries and electricity supplied via solar panels. Lead-acid batteries deteriorate quickly in hot weather and must be replaced every 3~4 years, which makes them more costly over their average life cycle.
In order to overcome these issues, it is possible to consider storing energy in a thermal form as opposed to an electrical form. Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is the temporary storage of high or low-temperature energy for later use, essentially acting as a thermal battery. Phase Change Materials (PCM) between 0°C and -100°C overcome the disadvantages of the short life span of batteries. TES is a static energy storage device which does not rely on a chemical reaction and therefore offers new practical application options.
