Modular thermal storage and distribution unit for cold storages with solar energy supply.

Résumé

Reliable cold room operation must be maintained even under intermittent energy supply, as in solar-powered systems. This study presents novel modular thermal energy Storage and Distribution Units (SDUs) enabling continuous cooling operation. Each SDU includes a vessel containing multiple discrete water–ice PCM elements, an air cooler, a pump, a control unit, and interconnection interfaces. A single SDU supports a 10 ft cold room for 48 hours in hot climates without operation of the refrigerating unit. Reused PET bottles and a minimized heat transfer fluid volume enhance sustainability and cost efficiency. In experimental tests with a prototype system the thermal performance was optimized. Special attention was paid to the stability of the PET bottles under repeated freeze–thaw cycles. The tests confirmed that the bottles remain tight and structurally stable, enabling safe long-term use. A software tool supports customers in implementing the new SDU in solar cold storage systems.
