Nouveaux enrobages bio-mimétiques favorisant la nucléation de la glace.

Novel bio-mimetically based ice-nucleating coatings for ice generation.

Résumé

The aim is to develop a new type of ice generator without mechanically moving parts by mimicking a peculiar mechanism to survive, used by some cold adapted organisms. These organisms show an ice nucleating activity (INA) through a specific membrane protein (INP) in order to slow down the freezing rate and thus survive extremely cold conditions; they protect their cell tissue due to controlled ice generation. Novel ice nucleating (INC) have been designed based on the cell membrane of the INA organism. Chemical compounds with similar estimated size and properties to that of the key residues of INPs were used to achieve a coating network able to nucleate and release ice. That way, there is no necessity to scrape the ice on the cold surface, which saves energy and makes the ice slurry production machine much simpler.
