New heat recovery and defrost methods for supermarket multiplex refrigeration systems.

Résumé

The paper briefly describes three of several recent developments made in the supermarket refrigeration area in Canada. Due to the cold weather conditions, the heat reclaim objective is still important for the store owners in order to increase their economic benefits. Another objective is to improve the refrigerated/frozen food quality by reducing the defrost cycle's lengths. Two of the most representative new supermarkets have been instrumented this year by LTEE, and the detailed energy and operational results for the next dominated heating season (winter) will be published later (spring 2001). The presented installations contain two different, non conventional heat reclaim methods, with the main aim to recover up to 100% the necessary energy for the space and domestic hot water heating and thus eliminating the use of any fossil combustible. One of the concepts allows to use the heat pump/heat reclaim system for air conditioning and sub-cooling purposes, and it is adaptable to the existing refrigeration systems. It combines the efficiency of the liquid pumping and of the mechanical sub-cooling with the heat reclaim method using heat pumps. The energy performances of these concepts are compared with those of a conventional system, simultaneously monitored in the same geographic area. A new fast defrost concept is also studied. The first results concerning the defrost cycle's length and the liquid pumping efficiency already seem promising.
