Numerical simulation of ice crystallization on superhydrophobic surface for ice slurry production.

Résumé

Developing energy-efficient secondary refrigeration systems is crucial for reducing emissions and improving thermal management. Among the most promising approaches, ice slurry generators based on phase change materials (PCM) offer high latent heat storage and efficient heat transfer. However, current technologies such as scraped-surface or supercooling generators suffer from high maintenance costs, discontinuous production and clogging due to uncontrolled ice adhesion on cold surfaces. To investigate the thermal and interfacial dynamics of a sessile water droplet freezing on a textured cold substrate, a mathematical framework based on enthalpy–porosity and level-set method has been developed to simulate the multiphase phase-change process on functionalized surfaces. The results highlight that the numerical simulations captured the droplet volume evolution during freezing and provided accurate predictions of solidification times on superhydrophobic surfaces. The model has been validated by comparison with experimental measurements and confirmed its ability to reproduce the crystallization kinetics.
