Résumé

A critical review of CFD modelling approaches for ice slurry flows is presented, covering 27 studies (2013–
2024) structured in different categories. The review serves as a direct foundation for the development of a
coupled Eulerian–Eulerian–Kinetic Theory of Granular Flows (KTGF)–Population Balance Model (PBM) for
ice slurry generation under supercooled conditions. Across the corpus, while methodological convergence is
observed at the framework level, several modelling aspects remain insufficiently assessed at the closure level,
with no clear consensus regarding the most appropriate formulation in each case due to the lack of systematic
comparative analysis. These include turbulence closure and near-wall treatment, near-wall effective thermal
conductivity corrections, maximum and limit packing fractions, drag model selection, spherical-particle
interfacial area assumptions, and the treatment of nucleation and supercooling-coupled crystallisation in PBM
implementations. These findings directly motivate the modelling choices and sensitivity studies planned for
the following work which aims to address the most critical of these gaps through a combined numerical and
experimental campaign.
