Optimization of a cooling system in view of energy saving and indoor environment quality.

Résumé

The energy consumption of a building depends on the design of the building envelope and the selected HVAC-systems. Also, the HVAC-system design offers many opportunities to save energy. For example, the demand controlled ventilation reduces both cooling and dehumidification of primary air as well as energy to run fans. The optimization of chillers is also important. Solar shading, lighting levels and control of lighting and shades are important areas to pay attention, because they reduces the energy consumption of lighting system as well as the energy consumption of cooling system. This paper presents four case studies where both improvements in building facade and HVAC-systems are studied in terms of energy consumption. The main focus is on the optimisation of the cooling system, but other components are also included in energy simulations. Total energy saving potential of HVAC-system is over 60% in this case study by actions that are simultaneously improving also comfort conditions.
