Résumé

Multi-stage cascade cycles are often utilized for applications such as supermarket refrigeration where a single vapor compression cycle is impractical for large temperature lifts. One of the main challenges in this field is refrigerant selection, especially since many common low-temperature refrigerants have large environmental impacts, e.g., GWP, ODP, and/or flammability. To overcome this, researchers have proposed refrigerant blend optimization, targeting fluids that deliver high system efficiency with minimal overall environmental impact. In this paper, we present a thermodynamic analysis-based multi-objective optimization approach for refrigerant blends for supermarket two-stage cascade cycles. The thermodynamic benefits of the proposed refrigerant blends are discussed in detail to gain insights into potential future refrigerants for low-temperature refrigeration. The proposed approach can enable the future design of novel multi-cascade refrigeration systems with improved efficiencies while also satisfying GWP constraints.
