Performance d'un congélateur domestique fonctionnant au GPL au lieu d'au R134a.

Performance of chest freezer that uses LPG instead of R134a.

Résumé

The paper deals with an experimental study to determine the various performance parameters of a chest freezer, of 200-litre capacity, when liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is used instead of the original refrigerant, R134a. The LPG is locally available, cheap, has an environmentally-friendly nature and consists of 24.4% propane, 56.4% butane and 17.2% isobutane. The chest freezer was charged with the optimum quantity of LPG and tests were carried out to determine the refrigeration effect, compressor work, compressor power, circulating mass flow rate of the LPG, refrigeration capacity, and COP as a function of evaporator temperature. These performance parameters were compared with that of R134a at the same operating conditions. The results indicate that the LPG has higher values of COP, lower refrigeration capacity and slightly lower compressor power than that of the original refrigerant R134a for all values of evaporator temperatures investigated. The freezer reached an evaporator temperature of -27 °C when LPG was used as the refrigerant. Furthermore, the freezer worked effectively without noticing any side effects or needing any adjustments. The results of the study indicate the successful use of LPG as an alternative refrigerant for R134a in chest freezers.
