Résumé

This publication presents the status and prospects for key energy technologies (electricity generation, buildings, industry and transport) and assesses their potential to make a difference by 2050 and outlines the barriers to implementing these technologies and the measures that can overcome such barriers. It is a response to the Group of Eight (G8) leaders at their Gleneagles Summit in July 2005, and to the IEA's Energy Ministers who met two months earlier. Both groups called for the IEA to develop and advise on alternative scenarios and strategies aimed at a clean, clever and competitive energy future. Extract from the table of contents: Technology and the global energy economy to 2050: scenarios to 2050: energy demand, supply and CO2 emissions (demand by fuel, electricity generation, transport, buildings, industry); technology strategies for a more sustainable energy future: power generation from renewables; nuclear power generation; transport; buildings and appliances (heating and cooling technologies; district heating and cooling systems; building energy-management systems; solar heating and cooling; biomass for heating and cooling); industry (cogeneration; CO2 capture and storage in industry). Energy technology status and outlook: electricity generation; road transport technologies and fuels; buildings and appliances (energy consumption in buildings; overview of building and appliance technologies; heating, cooling and ventilation; heat pumps, active solar cooling systems; district heating and cooling; thermal energy storage; cold appliances: refrigerators and freezers). The executive summary and policy implications in English, German, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese and French can be downloaded from the Web site: www.iea.org/w/bookshop/add.aspx?id=255, as well as 7 illustrations on the following: world total primary energy supply by fuel and primary energy use share by region in the Baseline Scenario; electricity demand growth by sector; development of wind turbine size; average fuel intensity of the light-duty vehicle stock; shares of final energy use by end-use in residential buildings; energy efficiency of various cement-clinker production technologies.
