Résumé

The fruit and vegetable industry is Brazil's most important, generating USD 26 billion. Fruit exports have grown steadily at a rate of USD 1 billion annually for the last 20 years, topping out at USD 19 billion in 1996. Despite this growth, most tropical fruits from the southern hemisphere are just beginning to penetrate the European, Japanese and US markets. The government has launched a program to support the development of irrigated fruit crops in northeastern Brazil. The goal is to take advantage of some one million semi-arid hectares in this part of the country. As the total extension of semi-arid land is some 100 million hectares, this program can last well into the future.
