Résumé
As a consequence of the phase-out of HCFC-22 promoted by the Montreal Protocol, the general trend in developing countries is to move to high GWP alternatives in the HRAC sector. Although that may represent low-investment solutions, facility owners and consumers should be aware of the associated high carbon emission level and environmental issues.
UNIDO, specialized agency of the United Nations with the mandate to promote inclusive and sustainable industrial development, works to facilitate and accelerate the introduction of low GWP alternatives in developing countries by identifying and mitigating barriers to their introduction, providing financial support to manufacturing enterprises as well as stimulating discussions among stakeholders.
Through demonstration projects in various countries (e.g. Viet Nam and The Gambia), UNIDO intends to act as a catalyzer for the adoption of new, climate-friendly and energy-saving technologies through policy measures, technology transfer and awareness-raising activities. These projects are particularly innovative since they pull together several sources of funds (e.g. multilateral and bilateral funding mechanisms, private sector, government programmes, investment banks) and focus on multiple fields of development such as environmental protection, food safety and market access.
