Résumé

MnCoGe orders ferromagnetically around room temperature and at high temperatures a martensitic phase transition between the hexagonal Ni2In-type and the orthorhombic TiNiSi-type structure occurs. Thus, in this material the magnetic and structural transitions are well separated. In this work, the authors show that the magneto-structural coupling and the giant magnetocaloric effect can be achieved by substituting Ni or Cu on the Co sites, or by varying the stoichiometry of MnCoGe. The occurrence of a first-order magneto-structural phase transition has been confirmed by magnetic and temperature dependent X-ray diffraction measurements. It is indicated that the addition of boron atoms occupying interstitial positions can strongly enhance the magnetocaloric effect. In some MnCoGe-based compounds, we meet conditions that result in a large magnetic entropy change in combination with a small observed thermal hysteresis.
