Résumé

Microbiological laboratories are essential in scientific research, clinical medicine, pharmaceutical products development, diagnosis of diseases and confirmation of new biological findings. The design and operation of Microbiology facilities must comply with biosafety and biosecurity principles of containing the valuable biological materials and guarantee the full protection of the occupants. A safe outside environment must be also ensured. Biosafety principles cover containment rules, technologies and practices whereas Biosecurity implements security procedures and practices for preventing accidental contamination or unauthorized access. The accountability for assuring biosafety and biosecurity has reached the level of global concern. Countries throughout the world have developed national codes of practice implementing the basic concepts developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The paper analyzes biosafety regulations and guidelines from the USA, the EU, the UK and Australia. The comparison shows a good agreement of the results but also some divergence in the area of ventilation exhaust systems. The design and performance of typical containment equipment and various ways of integrating the equipment into the building ventilation system are presented. Regulations in some countries may not entirely concur with all solutions. The paper intends to stimulate discussions on the subject.
