Résumé

Complexity characterizes the commercial refrigeration sector comprising very different refrigerating systems, which vary from small chest freezers to large centralized systems with refrigerating capacities of several hundreds of kW. Based on an ongoing continuous collection of equipment information that started several years ago, the Center for Energy and Processes has developed a database, RIEP, in which all relevant global information is stored. The assumptions for the refrigerant choice and charge, as well as specific emission functions are regularly reviewed by experts with specific sub-sector expertise. This paper describes the different types of commercial food outlets, which are significantly different in the various EU countries and which depend on social habits, supermarket opening hours, and equipment brand name leadership. The refrigerant banks of HCFCs, HFCs, hydrocarbons, CO2, ammonia, and CFCs, at least those that are still used, are quantified here at the European level (for the 25 EU countries). Emissions are presented in both metric tonnes of refrigerant and in equivalent tonnes of CO2. Based on two scenarios, the first one being a 'business as usual' one and the second a specific mitigation scenario, the development of the refrigerant banks and related emissions is forecast for the period 2005 to 2020. The difference between the two scenarios clearly shows the impact of containment, the change in refrigerant choice, and the use of secondary systems and heat transfer fluids.
