Résumé

The market potential for heat pumps in existing buildings is substantially larger than for new buildings. Yet this potential is far from being realised in many countries, largely due to the high distribution temperatures required in existing heat distribution installations. To contribute to a worldwide reduction of CO2 emissions, increased deployment of heat pumps for retrofitting is essential. This survey report provides an insight into the residential heat pump market and the initiatives to promote heat pump use in retrofit situations. Extract from the table of contents: market potential of heat pumps for retrofit (market status, government and utility policy, energy-saving potential: climatic conditions); barriers facing heat pumps for retrofit (heating and cooling distribution systems, economy of heat pumps for retrofit); overcoming the barriers to retrofitting (improved insulation standards, retrofitting low-temperature distribution systems, heat-pump systems for combined heating and cooling, natural refrigerants as working fluids, cycles adapted for retrofit application, absorption-type heat pumps systems); examples of heat pumps for retrofit.
